TIMELINE
Day 1
Southern Charm
Today, your Icelandic vacation starts, and you are excited about discovering an Iceland that tourists often overlook. You meet your co-travelers and discover that they’re just as excited. Our tour director gives us a brief presentation on what’s to come, and we leave Reykjavik, due south. Throughout the day, we marvel at all the famous waterfalls on the south coast, but we continue eastward, where we will encounter many of the reasons why Icelanders love that part of the country. Let’s celebrate a wonderful first day with much conversation over a delicious kick-off dinner!

Day 2
Zipping Through Icebergs
You woke up well-rested, feeling the peace and tranquility surrounding our hotel. “I’m in Iceland!” is your first thought. Soon we find ourselves on a Zodiac boat tour, zipping through the mirror-like waters of the Glacier Lagoon, jaws dropping at the sight of a huge glacier just a few hundred feet away from us. Icebergs, seals, and local birds form the magic moving with us and around us. Once back on land, we walk the sands of Diamond Beach, and we understand the name’s origin: large ice blocks sitting on black sand, reflecting the sunlight. In the afternoon, we arrive in Hofn (“harbor” in Icelandic), a fishing village founded in 1897 and our home for the next two nights. On a walking tour, we learn about the village and its food and taste local delicacies along the way. Then it’s time to unwind in our hotel by the sea with magnificent views.

Day 3
One Foot on a Volcano, Another on a Glacier
Day 3 of our vacation is enjoyed at a UNESCO World Heritage site, Vatnajökull National Park. We have an infinity of landscapes to explore at this place, one of Nature’s works of art shaped by the dynamic nature of volcanoes and glaciers. Then, we delight in food and fellowship in a historic building with wooden floorboards, colorful artwork, and dimly lit candles. Everything in the restaurant is prepared from scratch and done by hand, using quality ingredients. You can feel and taste the authenticity. It’s all very Icelandic.

Day 4
If a Tree Falls in Iceland, Does It Make a Sound?
After another outstanding breakfast, we head out, getting deeper into Iceland’s east fjords region, also home to the country’s only forest. There, we will find a strong focus on nature conservation, fascinating local art, and much Icelandic hospitality. We will spend two nights in Egilsstaðir and experience outdoor hot tubs, incomparable views, and the best of Icelandic food. Tranquility, cultural enrichment, and adventure all in one place.

Day 5
A Canyon, a Farm and Puffins – Find the Connection!
It is Day 5, and you feel fantastic about everything so far. Today brings us activities that immerse us even more in the “real Iceland.” Starting with geology, we explore a canyon that reveals towering basalt rock columns and a stunning blue-green glacial river. The area around the canyon, still relatively untouched, was inhabited only by sheep for a long time. Then, we meet the owners of a local organic farm, tour their facilities, and taste seasonal, made-from-scratch dishes. Finally, we discover Seydisfjordur, a place called by the poet Matthias Johannessen a “pearl enclosed in a shell.” You realize that you lost track of time as you stroll around the town’s center and admire the early 19th-century timber houses. Not far away, awaiting our visit, are rocky beaches, a puffin colony, and ruins with stories to tell.

Day 6
Walking on the Moon
Heading north, we will find Lake Myvatn and its surrounding region, home to mind-bending geological features, including pseudo-craters, lava pillars, lava fields, and hot springs. These sites also provide us with insight into the raw natural forces that shaped Iceland’s unique landscape. We explore what appears to be some lunar landscape, full of surprises, then take a dip in a pool of geothermal water containing a unique blend of minerals. Good for the skin, good for the soul. After a full day of exploration, we arrive at our fjord-side hotel surrounded by mountains. It is time to reflect on the day, eat, and rest.

Day 7
Standing on North of North
There’s something special about today: we are in Siglufjörður, Iceland’s northernmost town. So, let’s get out there and enjoy it to the fullest! Pick what appeals to you the most today: a guided hike through scenic trails or a visit to the award-winning Herring Era Museum and galleries to uncover the region’s past and history. After that, thirsty, we make our way to a family-owned craft brewery housed in an old fish factory for a private tour and tasting. Let’s toast to the enchantment of East and North Iceland, a place of fishing villages, flowing waterfalls, black sand beaches, rugged mountain escapes, and creeping glaciers. Let’s toast to new friendships. Authentic!

Day 8
Have Your Ice Cream and Eat It Too
Day 8 is here, and it is time to return to where everything started. We drive to Akureyri, Iceland’s second-largest city. In Akureyri, we have time to embrace one of the hidden pleasures of Icelandic life – having ice cream whenever you want, not just when the sunshine allows – at a local landmark. On your short flight back to Reykjavik, you reflect on just how spectacular the last eight days have been… and inevitably, you start making plans for your return to Iceland.
