Day 16

Itinerary

Your arrival at the hip and vibrant Norwegian capital is the start of your adventure. Spend the first day exploring the city at your own pace and, on your second day, join a local guide and enjoy a wonderful day trip to discover Fredrikstad, a true gem of a town located a short train ride from the capital. The Flåm Railway, a highlight in the famous Sognefjord / Norway in a Nutshell®, is coming up!

Continuing your journey, embark on the Sognefjord in a Nutshell® (another version of the Norway in a Nutshell®), a trip which will take you through some of Norway’s most beautiful fjord scenery. You will experience the scenic Bergen Railway, the breathtaking Flam Railway, the Aurlandsfjord, and the narrow and dramatic UNESCO-protected Nærøyfjord.

Included in this segment of your trip is 2 nights at the renowned Kviknes Hotel, in Balestrand, which will allow you to further immerse yourself in the splendor of Norway (dinner included at the hotel on both nights). Feel the thrill of a fjord cruise aboard a fast RIB boat along the Sognefjord or try some leisurely kayaking, an incredibly beautiful and peaceful experience.

Your beautiful ferry ride along the Sognefjord is concluded in Bergen, the city known as the “Gateway to the Fjords.” Take your time when exploring this magnificent town, which is beautiful however you look at it. There you can eat lunch at the Fish Market, admire the entire city atop Mount Fløyen and soak in the local art at the KODE museums. It is also possible to add a private tour of the city to your program if you wish.

Depart from Bergen aboard a cruise ship on an overnight journey to Ålesund and enjoy some free time to explore this charming Art Noveau city. The following day takes you on an unforgettable day trip to explore Ålesund and Geiranger, home of Norway’s most famous fjord: the Geirangerfjord. With its characteristic “S” shape, high waterfalls and abandoned mountain farms, the fjord landscape is included on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites. Ålesund and its surrounding areas are among the most visited sites by tourists in Norway. You will have plenty of time to explore this beautiful city and go for hikes along some of its many trails.

Following Ålesund we continue our journey north, now on our way to Trondheim, affectionally known as “Norway’s Capital of Knowledge.” This enchanting city is home to the country’s largest university – the Norwegian University of Science and Technology – and, consequently, is also the birth place for much of the innovation enjoyed in Norway today. The Nidaros Cathedral is a major landmark in the city and you will enjoy visiting it during a walking tour of the city. Just outside of Trondheim you will also savor lunch and a day at the Sverresborg open-air folk museum placed around the ruins of King Sverre’s castle, which dates all the way back to 1183. There you will learn about the Norwegian Civil War period and Trondheim’s very important place in Norwegian history.
From Trondheim we fly to the very south of Norway and spend 2 nights in Stavanger, a nature-lovers paradise. In addition to walking the cobblestone streets of the city’s “old town,” you will also cruise the calm waters of the Lysefjord (“the fjord of light”) and hike to the top of the Preikestolen (“Pulpit Rock”), one of the country’s most famous attractions. NOTE: if you do not want to experience the hike, we will replace it with an extended cruise of the Lysefjord and other activities in Stavanger.
Your journey ends with a flight back to Oslo, where your beautiful tour of Norway started.

FAQs

Our group tours allow travelers to explore Scandinavian destinations in the company of a very experienced Tour Director and a small group of fellow travelers. Group sizes are limited to 12 travelers and a limited number of departure dates are offered for each tour throughout the year. The Tour Director accompanies the group from beginning to end of the tour and often a private driver and vehicle (luxury mini coach) are also employed for maximum comfort. Additionally, we count on the expertise of several local guides at each of the destinations visited, further enhancing the experience. Our group tours typically include most dinners, in order to better showcase local cuisines, and allow for the exploration of more remote destinations.
This option is ideal for travelers who enjoy traveling in the most worry-free manner possible while discovering destinations in the company of others, making new friends along the way.

Our private tours allow travelers to explore Scandinavian destinations with programs offering a great balance between pre-arranged activities and free time to explore. When implementing one of our private programs for you, we handle all the logistics involved, including: hotels, airport transfers, transportation from city to city and all guided activities and excursions. You will not be with a Tour Director throughout the program, but you will enjoy a number of sightseeing experiences led by experienced local guides. We can work with your desired dates, provided that availability exists at the many services involved in your program.
This option is ideal for travelers who enjoy traveling independently and with a higher degree of flexibility to explore each location on their own.

Technically, Scandinavia refers primarily to Norway, Denmark and Sweden. When thinking of Nordic Countries, add to the list Finland and Iceland as well. With our group tours of Scandinavia you can choose from a number of fixed departures throughout the year.
